Professor Kristian Gleditsch is a Regius Professor of Political Science in the Department of Government at the University of Essex. He serves as director of the Michael Nicholson Centre for Conflict and Cooperation and is a research associate at PRIO. His research focuses on international and intrastate conflict, democratization, and spatial dimensions of political processes.
Education:

- Cand.Mag. in Political Science (University of Oslo, 1991-93), with additional degrees in Social Anthropology, Spanish, and Statistics
Research Interests: Gleditsch explores conflict dynamics, including protest mobilization, mathematical modeling of political processes, and the spatial aspects of social phenomena. His work emphasizes the intersection of quantitative methods and real-world conflict scenarios.
Publications & Grants: Over 150 journal articles and several books, including Spatial Regression Models. His research has been supported by grants focusing on conflict prediction, democratization pathways, and transnational conflict dynamics. Notable work includes the GIDP dataset and contributions to the VIEWS prediction challenge.
Advising & Mentoring: Supervised numerous PhD students researching topics like civil conflict dynamics, terrorism, and peace processes. Recent advisees include Lady Johanna Amaya Panche (2023), Qi Zhu (2025), and Shiyi Xia (2024).
Labs & Collaborations: Leads the Michael Nicholson Centre and collaborates with PRIO, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to conflict analysis. Engages in global conferences, including keynote addresses at the International Studies Association and Households in Conflict Network.
