Kristi Barnes serves as an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Marietta College, appointed in 2023. Her office is located in Mills 402, and she can be reached at 740.376.4508. Dr. Barnes holds a BA in Psychology from Marietta College (1998), and both her MA and Ph.D. in Lifespan Developmental Psychology from West Virginia University (2000, 2003).
Dr. Barnes' research focuses on gender, interpersonal relationships, perceptions of self and others, and educational outcomes, with particular emphasis on contextual factors including place of residence and cultural influences connected to Appalachia. As a lifespan developmental psychologist, she primarily works with adult populations to understand developmental processes across the life course. Her work bridges theoretical developmental frameworks with practical applications in Appalachian communities.
She teaches a range of psychology courses including Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Adolescence, and Psychology of Gender across both fall and spring semesters. Her teaching approach integrates her research interests with foundational psychological principles to provide students with comprehensive understanding of human development.
