Kristen Koltun is an Assistant Professor of Sports Medicine and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh, holding appointments at both the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory and Warrior Human Performance Center. Her work is primarily supported by the Department of Defense and focuses on the physiological aspects of human performance in demanding environments.
Dr. Koltun earned her PhD in Kinesiology from Penn State University and her Master's in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, both specializing in Exercise Physiology. She is a Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) and Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (ISCD-CBDT).
Her research interests center on the interactions among metabolism, endocrinology, and musculoskeletal health in physically active populations. She investigates physiological factors underlying bone adaptation to changes in loading patterns, such as during exercise or military training, with a particular focus on women's health and sex-differences in the effects of energy deficiency on metabolism and reproductive function. Her expertise in musculoskeletal health and human performance optimization also has relevant applications to spaceflight countermeasures research.
Analysis of Dr. Koltun's recent publications reveals a strong thematic focus on military physiology, bone health, and nutrition. Her work spans from basic research on bone adaptation mechanisms to applied studies on nutritional interventions (particularly prune consumption) for bone health in postmenopausal women. She has made significant contributions to understanding the Female and Male Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, with applications to military populations.
Dr. Koltun has received several prestigious awards including the Gail E. Butterfield Nutrition Travel Award (ACSM), Young Investigator Award (Bone Interest Group-ACSM), NASA Space Physiology Research Grant (ACSM), and Young Investigator Travel Award (ASBMR).
As a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), she actively contributes to advancing research in her fields. Dr. Koltun is currently accepting PhD student applications for Fall 2024 and continues to secure Department of Defense funding for her research on physiological factors in military training and performance.
She leads research initiatives at the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory/Warrior Human Performance Center, focusing on biomarker monitoring during arduous military training to maintain readiness and performance. Her team employs advanced methodologies including markerless motion capture to assess injury risk and physiological adaptation in military personnel.
