Kristen Ellen Treen is a Lecturer in American Literature at the School of English, University of St Andrews. She holds a BA from Jesus College, Cambridge, an M.Phil in American Literature from King's College, Cambridge, and a Ph.D in American Civil War literature from King's College. Her research focuses on 19th- and early 20th-century American literature, material culture, and commemoration studies. Her current projects include a book under revision exploring Civil War material remnants' impact on literary form and national identity, and the collaborative digital heritage project 'Commemorative Cultures: The American Civil War Monuments Project,' analyzing Civil War monuments. Future work will examine Reconstruction-era commemoration and memory.
Her research integrates Civil War objects, such as souvenirs and monuments, with literary analysis. She has contributed to Apollo, The Observer, and The Junket, and leads interdisciplinary projects with Computer Science and historical teams. Treen’s expertise spans American Civil War literature, material culture, visual technologies, and Marianne Moore’s poetry.
