Krishnan Dhandapani serves as Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, with a secondary appointment in The Graduate School. His research and teaching activities are centered at CB 2506.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Endocrinology, Medical College of Georgia (2003)
- MS in Neurobiology and Behavior, University of Connecticut (1998)
- BS in Animal Physiology, University of Connecticut (1996)
As a translational neuroscientist, Dr. Dhandapani investigates neuro-immune mechanisms in traumatic brain injury and stroke pathologies. His research program spans:
- Traumatic Brain Injury mechanisms and interventions
- Hemorrhagic and Ischemic Stroke pathophysiology
- Neuroimmunological responses in acute brain injury
- Circadian rhythm influences on neurological outcomes
Recent publications reveal a strategic focus on time-dependent stroke mechanisms, cannabinoid therapeutics for neurodegenerative conditions, and biomarker discovery in preclinical stroke models. His work integrates molecular neuroscience, circadian biology, and translational pharmacology to address critical gaps in acute brain injury treatment.
Major recognitions include:
- SHINE Award (Augusta University, 2023)
- Distinguished Research Award (The Graduate School, 2020)
- Distinguished Alumnus Award (The Graduate School, 2015)
- Jag20 Emerging Alumni Award (2014)
- Outstanding Faculty Award (2012)
Dr. Dhandapani teaches NURO 9300 (Research in Neuroscience) and NURO 9210 (Investigation of a Problem in Neuro), while maintaining extensive service commitments including Promotion and Tenure Committees, MCG Admissions Committee leadership, and NIH/DoD grant review panels. His community engagement includes regular K-12 science outreach at multiple schools.
He collaborates with the Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network (SPAN) and Georgia Cancer Center's Small Animal Imaging Shared Resource, driving interdisciplinary research on neuro-immune interactions in brain injury models.
