Krešimir Purgar is an Associate Professor at the Academy of Arts and Culture, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek, where he leads the Department of Visual and Media Arts. He holds a PhD in Art Sciences and a BA in Art History and Italian Studies. Previously, he taught visual-theoretical courses at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Textile Technology (2010–2017), advancing from external associate to Assistant Professor.
His research centers on the interdisciplinary study of visuality, with emphases on:
- Image theory and the science of images
- Critical analysis of visual culture
- Intersections of art, literature, and digital media
- Development of visual studies as an academic discipline
Purgar founded the Center for Visual Studies in Zagreb (2006), serving as its head and editing the Visual Theory book series. He introduced Croatia's first university course dedicated to image science (Theory of Image, 2016) and is developing graduate programs in Visual Studies and Art Criticism at the Academy of Arts and Culture.
