Kressen Thyen

Dr. Kressen Thyen is an Associate at the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies (since 2019) and a Research Fellow at the University of Bremen's Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (since 2018). His prior role (2017–2018) was as a Research Fellow in the IDCAR-Network at GIGA. His research focuses on political behavior in autocracies, contentious politics in the MENA region, and authoritarian international cooperation. He holds teaching experience at the University of Tübingen in political science methodology and civil society studies.

His work spans empirical methods and regional expertise in Maghreb countries like Morocco and Egypt. He contributed to the Leibniz-funded IDCAR project (2014–2019), analyzing authoritarian regime interactions. His publications explore topics such as Tunisia’s political trajectory post-2011, Arab citizen perceptions of the EU, and youth mobilization dynamics in Egypt and Morocco.
