Prof. Dr. Kourosh Kolahi is a Professor of Automation and Control Engineering at Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW) in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where he also serves as Program Director for the Master's degree in Systems Engineering (MPO 2017 and MPO 2024). He teaches in various bachelor's and master's programs including Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Automotive Electronics.
His research focuses on intelligent sensors, particularly Coriolis mass flow meters, active vibration damping of weakly damped dynamic systems, multiphase flow measurement, and modeling, control and regulation of BLDC motors. His expertise spans theoretical modeling and experimental identification, algorithm development for automation technology, sensor data fusion, and model-based measurement and control of dynamic systems.
Prof. Kolahi's publication record shows consistent focus on flow measurement technology, particularly Coriolis mass flow meters, with significant contributions to density measurement, sensor diagnostics, and model-based correction techniques. His work bridges theoretical control engineering with practical industrial applications, with numerous industry collaborations spanning biotechnology, steel processing, and manufacturing.
Through his industry partnerships with companies like Krohne Messtechnik, E-Nema GmbH, EGE-Elektronik, and British American Tobacco, Prof. Kolahi has developed practical applications including biomass sensors, sail assistance systems, thermal flow controllers, and ultrasound welding monitoring systems using artificial neural networks.
He teaches courses including Control Engineering, Automation Technology II, Modern Methods of Control Engineering, Applied System Theory, Modeling and System Identification, and Electrical Engineering/Mechatronics Project Work. His well-equipped laboratories for automation and control engineering as well as simulation support both teaching and research activities.
