Koos Zwaan is a Professor (Lector) in Innovation in the Music Industry at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, leading the International Music Industry Lab. His research focuses on transforming the music industry into a healthier, more sustainable sector through technological and social innovation. He holds a PhD on Dutch pop musicians' career development and is affiliated with the Applied Research x Creativity knowledge center. His work intersects popular music culture, media studies, and digital technology impacts.
He collaborates with students, organizations, and European research projects (e.g., creative industries in Haarlem, EU mobility policies). Active in the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM), he served as editor of IASPM@Journal and authored works on music fandom, TV formats like Idols, and artist media strategies. His 2025 lectorial address, 'You Say You Want a Revolution,' critiques AI’s role in music while advocating for equitable industry reforms.
Zwaan’s research emphasizes participatory design, stakeholder engagement, and addressing challenges like artist mental health and digital dependency. He develops strategies for venues and creative sectors through projects like Podiumpower.nl, blending academic rigor with practical solutions.
