Konstantinos Poulios is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (Solid Mechanics) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His research focuses on advanced computational mechanics, including topology optimization, finite element methods, and the mechanical behavior of composite and additive-manufactured materials. He actively supervises multiple PhD projects addressing topics like fatigue life assessment, contact mechanics, and multi-scale materials modeling. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through innovations in sustainable materials and energy-efficient designs.
Key research interests include: topology optimization with contact phenomena, fracture mechanics of composites, and the integration of manufacturing constraints into computational design. He has pioneered methods for modeling friction and internal contact in complex systems, with applications ranging from biomedical devices to wind turbine components.
Recent publications emphasize 3D topology optimization with contact, thermo-mechanical regulators, and biomechanical modeling on fixed grids. His work is characterized by interdisciplinary collaboration, evidenced by projects involving additive manufacturing, crystal plasticity, and X-ray CT analysis. He has been a guest lecturer at international conferences, showcasing his expertise in computational mechanics and materials science.
Advising roles include supervision of PhD students in corrosion fatigue modeling, additive manufacturing simulations, and machine learning-optimized engine components. Research grants support projects on energy absorption optimization and multi-scale simulations for metal additive manufacturing. His lab work integrates advanced numerical techniques with experimental validation, as seen in studies of titanium microstructure and composite failure analysis.
