Konstantinos I. Stergiou

Konstantinos I. Stergiou is a Professor (part-time) at the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and currently serves as Director of the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). He previously directed the Laboratory of Ichthyology from 2007-2013. With expertise spanning multiple aspects of marine fisheries and ecology, Stergiou has established himself as a leading figure in Mediterranean marine research.

His educational background includes:

• MSc in Oceanography from the University of Montreal (1984)
• PhD in Fish Biology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1991)

Stergiou's research focuses on fish life-history and population dynamics, fisheries ecology, modeling and forecasting, ecosystem management, and bibliometrics. His work particularly emphasizes Mediterranean marine ecosystems, examining how climate change, fishing pressure, and management practices affect fish populations and marine food webs. He has developed innovative approaches to fisheries stock assessment, particularly for data-poor situations, and has made significant contributions to understanding trophic interactions in marine ecosystems.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on climate change impacts on Mediterranean fisheries, with particular attention to temperature trends affecting fish distribution and productivity. Stergiou has pioneered the use of "Mean Temperature of the Catch" metrics to track climate-driven shifts in fisheries. His work also addresses critical management issues including overfishing, discard practices, and the effectiveness of minimum landing sizes.

Stergiou has participated in 26 national and international projects and coordinated 8 EU projects. His professional service includes:
