Professor Konstantinos Gerasimidis is Professor of Clinical Nutrition at the University of Glasgow's School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. He holds an honorary contract as Clinical Paediatric Nutrition Scientist with the National Health Service at Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and is a State Registered Dietitian in Greece.
His primary research interests focus on two major areas: disease-associated malnutrition and the interaction between diet and gut microbiota in health and disease. In disease-associated malnutrition, he investigates the link between malnutrition and clinical outcomes in adults and children with acute and chronic disease, with particular emphasis on screening, assessment, and nutritional interventions. He has developed the Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) and the infant Nutrition Early Nutrition Warning Score (iNEWS).
Regarding diet and gut microbiota, Professor Gerasimidis leads research exploring the role of gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, juvenile arthritis, and intestinal failure. He has developed the CD-TREAT (Crohn's Disease Treatment by Eating) diet and has been principal investigator in multiple multicentre dietary interventions including iPENS, BIOPIC, Mi-OCEAN, and UC-TREAT studies.
His publication trends demonstrate consistent focus on nutritional interventions for inflammatory bowel disease, gut microbiome analysis, and malnutrition assessment tools across high-impact journals in gastroenterology, nutrition, and microbiology. His work frequently involves interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, microbiologists, and nutrition scientists.
Professor Gerasimidis has built a substantial research program with cumulative funding exceeding £14 million from diverse sources including charities, research councils, industry, and health professional bodies. His current research team comprises 7 postdoctoral research associates, 1 research associate, and 13 PhD/MD students.
He maintains active leadership roles in professional societies, including membership in the Porto IBD Group of ESPGHAN and faculty positions in multiple ESPGHAN initiatives. Previously, he served as Chair of the Clinical Malnutrition Group of ESPGHAN and Secretary elect of ESPEN's Special Interest Group in Clinical Paediatric Nutrition.
