Konstantinos Arfanakis is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Medical Imaging Research Center (MIRC) at Illinois Institute of Technology’s Armour College of Engineering. He also serves as Director at the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering. His expertise spans MRI technology, neuroimaging, and aging-related neuropathologies.
Education:
- Ph.D., Medical Physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2002)
- M.S., Medical Physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison (1999)
- B.S., Physics, University of Athens, Greece (1997)
Research Focus: Dr. Arfanakis develops MRI-based biomarkers for age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and LATE-NC. His work emphasizes brain atlases, ex-vivo MRI, and multi-parametric imaging. Key areas include white matter integrity, TDP-43 pathology correlations, and vascular cognitive impairment.
Awards:
- ISMRM Magna Cum Laude Merit Award (2019, 2017)
- de Leon Prize in Neuroimaging (2012)
- Multiple awards for highly cited MRI research papers
Grants & Labs: Leads the MIRC and collaborates with the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center. His research integrates neuroimaging with neuropathology and genetics, advancing biomarker development for dementia.
Professional Roles: Associate Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Editorial Board member of Brain Imaging and Behavior, and core leader at the Neuroimaging Core of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
