Konstantin G. Birukov, MD, PhD, is a Tenured Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in Physiology and Medicine. He serves as Director of the Lung Biology Research Program and Associate Chair for Basic Science Research in the Department of Anesthesiology. His research focuses on acute lung injury, sepsis, endothelial permeability, and lipid mediators.
- 1981-1984: Biochemistry, Moscow State Medical School
- 1986: Medical Doctor, Moscow State Medical School
- 1989-1994: Research Investigator, Institute of Experimental Cardiology Research Center
- 1993: PhD in Biochemistry, National Cardiology Research Center
Birukov's work explores lung aging, endothelial barrier dysfunction, and mechanotransduction in the context of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, and pulmonary inflammation. His studies emphasize oxidized phospholipids, DAMPs, and GPR68 signaling pathways.
Scientific contributions include the discovery of GPR68 inhibitors for lung protection, mechanosensitive Rap1 activation, and the role of CD36 in inflammation. His 2025 research highlights VEGF-D's protective effects in lung injury and novel therapies for bacterial pathogen-induced endothelial dysfunction.
- Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurial Research
His publications reveal trends in lipid mediators, mechanotransduction, and therapeutic peptides targeting CD36/GPR68. Current projects address trauma-induced lung injury mechanisms and translational approaches for vascular barrier restoration.
