Konrad Gergely is a Ph.D. researcher at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, affiliated with the Department of History. His research focuses on the intersection of military history, modernity, and social conduct, particularly analyzing hygiene and health practices among recruits in the Habsburg Army during the late 19th century. His thesis, supervised by Monika Baar and Lauren Kassell, explores how armies functioned as instruments of modernization through disciplinary measures like daily hygiene routines.
His work aligns with broader transnational and cultural history frameworks, emphasizing the role of military institutions in shaping societal norms. His recent publications include studies on military structures in Dualist Transylvania and the commemoration of Austro-Hungarian soldiers in Rome’s Santa Maria dell’Anima crypt.
