Koichi Hagimoto serves as Professor of Spanish in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Wellesley College, with significant contributions to the Latin American Studies program. He currently holds the position of department chair (2023–present) and participates in multiple institutional committees including the Slater International Board, Ruhlman and Tanner Conference Committees, and the Executive Board for Latin American Studies Program.
His academic credentials include a B.A. from Soka University of America, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.
Hagimoto specializes in 19th and 20th century Latin American literature and culture through the lens of Transpacific Studies, examining historical connections between Asia and Latin America. His research explores anti-imperial literature, intercolonial alliances, and transpacific modernity, with particular focus on Nikkei (Japanese-Argentine) literary traditions and the cultural impact of Japan in Argentine modernity. This work bridges Hispanic Caribbean studies with broader hemispheric and transnational frameworks.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- 2024 Marysa Navarro Best Book Prize for Samurai in the Land of the Gaucho
- Ana and Samuel Pinanski Teaching Prize (2012)
- Apgar Award for Teaching Excellence (2019)
Hagimoto actively integrates research with teaching, offering courses ranging from elementary Spanish to advanced seminars on Cuba and Asia in Latin America. He has directed Wellesley's Wintersession program in Cuba and was featured in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese's Member Spotlight (2021). His service extends to campus-wide committees including Curriculum & Academic Policy and Minority Recruitment.
