Koenraad Van Laere is a full professor at the Department of Imaging & Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven. He serves as department chair and heads multiple divisions including Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging, Division Molecular Imaging Research and Clinic Leuven, and several subdivisions under the Miracle research group. He is also a member of the KU Leuven Brain Institute and KU Leuven Cancer Institute.
His research focuses on Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging, with emphasis on neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He develops novel PET tracers for early diagnosis, disease progression monitoring, and therapeutic target identification.
The recent publications highlight his work on Tau PET imaging in cognitive disorders, HDAC6 tracers for ALS, and synaptic density loss in Alzheimer’s disease. His projects include ultrahigh-resolution PET applications in brain nuclei, spinal cord, and limbic structures, along with clinical trials comparing imaging modalities like PET/CT, MRI, and SPECT.
Van Laere's affiliations include leadership roles in the Research Policy Council, Faculty of Medicine Council, and Department of Imaging & Pathology Board. He also contributes to educational programs in nuclear medicine and problem-solving skills.
