Koen de Koning is an Assistant Professor in the Earth Systems and Global Change department at Wageningen University & Research. His research focuses on developing digital twin technologies for real-time ecological monitoring, particularly in avian migration patterns and wildlife conservation.
Key research interests include:
- Integration of digital twin technology with ecological systems
- Policy-maker engagement in environmental decision-making
- High-resolution forecasting of animal migration dynamics
- Climate impact analysis on wildlife behavior
Recent work highlights include the Crane Radar project – an operational eco-digital twin system tracking European crane migrations – and contributions to Ecological Informatics and Ecological Modelling journals. His projects involve collaborative efforts with PhD candidates and international research networks.
He has advised two active PhD projects: Predictive Models in Crop-Wildlife Conflicts and Developing digital twins for real-time biodiversity monitoring. Media engagements include expert commentary on crane migration patterns and innovative conservation technologies.
