Koen Byttebier is a Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) within the Faculty of Law’s Private and Economic Law Department. His research focuses on international law, corporate governance, energy policy, and socio-economic ethics, with a particular emphasis on global south perspectives. He is actively involved in transnational legal frameworks addressing food systems, energy access, and sustainable development goals.
Key affiliations include Brussels Research Institute on Development, Governance and Empowerment. Major projects include fostering farmers’ rights to seed in Indonesia, analyzing Cuban energy systems, and exploring legal mechanisms for corporate accountability. He has authored over 350 publications, including books and peer-reviewed articles on topics like agroecological sustainability and ethical socioeconomics.
Recent activities include keynote presentations on the right to education under capitalism (2022) and Cuban energy foundations (2022), as well as editorial work for civil law codices. His research spans 25+ years with collaborations in over 10 countries, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to law, environment, and human rights.
Notable supervision includes 104 academic works, focusing on doctoral projects in international arbitration and sustainable development law. Current initiatives include bilateral VUB-UNAIR Indonesia PhD programs addressing tropical agriculture challenges.
