Klaus Pohl is a full Professor for Software Systems Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He serves as founding director of paluno – The Ruhr Institute for Software Technology – and was the scientific founding director of the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre (lero) from 2005 to 2007. His academic career spans roles as program and general chair for major conferences like CAiSE 2017, ICSE 2013, and SPLC 2005/2008.
His research focuses on self-adaptive systems, cloud computing, cyber-physical systems, and requirements engineering. Key sub-disciplines include proactive adaptation, variability management, and data protection in distributed environments. His work bridges theoretical advancements with industrial applications, particularly in embedded and service-oriented systems.
Recent publications (2024–2023) emphasize explainable reinforcement learning, decentralized coordination of adaptive systems, runtime privacy mechanisms, and predictive business process monitoring.
