Klaus-Dieter Bauer is a Research Scientist in the Transfer Group at RICAM, Austrian Academy of Sciences, since October 2019. He also serves as a Scientific Assistant in R&D at MathConsult since July 2019. Previously, he held roles as a PhD student (2013–2019) and Scientific Assistant (2014–2018) at the Zentrum für Oberflächen- und Nanoanalytik, Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. He obtained his Diploma in Technical Physics from JKU in 2012 and his PhD in Technical Physics in 2019, awarded under the prestigious Promotio sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae.
His research focuses on computational methods for partial differential equations (PDEs), inverse problems, mathematical data science, and applications in mechanical engineering and materials science. Notable projects include nonlinear dynamics analysis of electric drive units, powertrain simulation beyond linear regimes, and surface physics investigations using second harmonic generation. Bauer has contributed to interdisciplinary collaborations, including guest researcher stints at the Max-Planck Institute for Iron Research (2011) and the University of Vienna (2014).
Award highlights include the Wilhelm Macke Award (2013) and a poster award at the Optics of Surfaces conference (2017). His work bridges theoretical models with industrial applications, particularly in automotive NVH optimization and materials characterization.
