Professor Klaus Bachmann is a full Professor at the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities, affiliated with the Institute of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences in Warsaw, and Department of Politics and Public Policies. He serves as Head of the Center for the Study of History and Justice.
His research spans European integration, transitional justice mechanisms (including lustration, international criminal tribunals, and truth commissions), modern Central and Eastern European history, and totalitarian movements. His work analyzes political transitions through comparative institutional analysis and historical case studies.
His publications since 2011 focus on the interplay between political power and judicial processes in post-authoritarian contexts, with particular attention to EU integration challenges and constitutional crises in Poland. Key themes include the effectiveness of international tribunals and the tension between legal accountability and political stability during transitions.
As a former foreign correspondent (1988-2004) for Austrian, Swiss, German, and Polish media including Gazeta Wyborcza and Polityka, he brings journalistic insights to academic analysis. He teaches courses on European integration, contemporary history, international business, and transitional justice at SWPS University.
He actively contributes to public discourse through Polish media and leads the Center for the Study of History and Justice, which coordinates research on memorialization policies and legal transitions.
