Klaas-Jan Tielrooij serves as a Senior Group Leader at ICN2 (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) and Associate Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. He founded the Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems group at ICN2 in October 2018 as a Junior Group Leader and was promoted to Senior Group Leader in 2022. Between 2018 and 2020, he was Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Excellence Material Science in Mainz, Germany.
Dr. Tielrooij obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam in December 2010. Prior to joining ICN2, he was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO).
His research focuses on ultrafast charge and energy transport phenomena in nanoscale systems, particularly in graphene and other two-dimensional materials. He employs advanced techniques such as terahertz spectroscopy, spatiotemporal microscopy, and ultrafast optical methods to investigate fundamental physical processes at extremely short timescales. His work bridges fundamental physics with potential applications in next-generation optoelectronic devices and quantum technologies.
Dr. Tielrooij's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on terahertz photonics, graphene-based devices, and thermal transport in 2D materials. His work shows consistent innovation in developing new measurement techniques and uncovering fundamental physical phenomena in nanoscale systems.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards:

Dr. Tielrooij has authored more than 65 peer-reviewed publications with over 8,500 citations and has delivered more than 50 invited talks internationally. He leads the Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems group at ICN2, which maintains active collaborations with institutions worldwide. His research has significant implications for developing high-speed communication technologies, advanced photonic devices, and novel quantum applications.
