Kitty Nijmeijer

Dr. Kitty Nijmeijer is a Full Professor in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), leading the Membrane Materials and Processes Group. She holds dual appointments as a Full Professor in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and Research Full Professor at EIRES. Her work focuses on polymer membrane design for sustainable processes, with emphasis on water and energy efficiency.

Academic Background: BSc/MSc from Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and University of Twente (2003 PhD). Postdoc at University of Twente, followed by roles as Research Director (European Membrane Institute Twente) and academic positions at University of Twente (2006–2016). Visiting scientist at UC Berkeley (2010).

Research Interests: Development of membranes for molecular separations, integrating material science and process technology. Key areas include electrodialysis, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), biofuel recovery, and circular economy applications. Recent work addresses energy storage (flow batteries), membrane recyclability, and waste valorization.

Awards: 2018 Academic Society Award (Sustainable Energy) and NWO START-UP Award (Membranes à la carte project).

Advising & Grants: Supervised 44 research projects/students. Active in EU-funded projects including NEWBAT (Redox Flow Batteries), liquid crystalline polymer membranes, and PHA recovery initiatives. Collaborates with Shell (SRTCA) and institutions globally.

Labs/Teams: Head of Membrane Materials and Processes Group at TU/e. Involved in Blue Energy demonstration projects (Afsluitdijk, NL) and science outreach via TEDx talks and Dutch Chemical Association advocacy.
