Kit Candlin is a Senior Lecturer in the History of the Americas at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He previously held a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sydney and a one-year research associate position at the University of Melbourne. His expertise lies in Atlantic history, focusing on American prisoners of war, free women of color, refugees, and slavery in the West Indies, with a particular emphasis on cross-cultural and intercolonial dynamics in the Windward Islands of the southern Caribbean. He is a former President of the Australian Association of Caribbean Studies and a member of the Centre for the Study of Violence.
Career: Candlin has authored two major books: The Last Caribbean Frontier, 1795-1815 (2012) and Enterprising Women: Race, Gender and Power in the Revolutionary Atlantic 1770-1830 (2016, co-authored with Cassandra Pybus). He is currently completing a monograph on the Fedon Rebellion in Grenada. His recent publications span gender roles in colonial societies, slavery's economic impact, and intercolonial conflict, with a focus on marginalized groups in the Atlantic world.
Research Interests: Candlin explores liminal borders, hinterlands, and power dynamics in the Caribbean during the Age of Revolutions. His work intersects with themes of race, gender, violence, and colonialism, emphasizing women's agency, enslaved resistance, and refugee movements. His recent articles analyze the role of women in the Fedon Rebellion, intercolonial trade networks, and the paradoxes of slavery amelioration policies.

Supervision and Outreach: Candlin supervises PhD students in topics ranging from Caribbean women's agency to psychoanalytic cosmology. He frequently lectures high school students and appears on radio programs (JJJ, ABC Radio, RRR) to discuss historical themes.
