Kirsi Salonen is a Professor of Medieval History and PhD coordinator at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen. Her research focuses on medieval papal administration, ecclesiastical law, and Scandinavian religious history, with particular attention to the Vatican archives and penitential practices. She has presented lectures globally, including at institutions in Sweden, Poland, France, and Italy, exploring topics like papal pardons, medieval legal systems, and the role of bishops in Scandinavia.
Her work bridges legal, religious, and administrative history, analyzing sources such as papal dispensations, court records, and diocesan documents. She coordinates doctoral training and has contributed to projects like the Diplomatarium fennicum digital archive. Her research often highlights the interplay between local Scandinavian contexts and broader European ecclesiastical institutions.
Salonen’s recent lectures include analyses of the 1236 Häme rebellion, papal administration during the Great Western Schism, and the legal frameworks governing medieval marriages and crimes. She has published extensively on topics ranging from the Sacra Romana Rota to the careers of medieval clerics in Rome.
