Kirk J. Larsen is a Professor of Biology at Luther College, located in Decorah, Iowa. He has been teaching in the Department of Biology since 1993 and leads the entomology research laboratory. His research focuses on insect ecology, particularly in prairie ecosystems and invasive species impacts. He holds a Ph.D. in Entomology from Ohio State University, an M.S. from Michigan State University, and a B.S. from Calvin College.
Dr. Larsen's research explores how habitat and management practices affect insect biodiversity in northeast Iowa. His laboratory documents insect diversity through surveys and communicates findings via publications and presentations. Notable projects include studies on buckthorn invasions and prairie restoration effects on ground-dwelling insects.
He teaches courses such as Entomology (BIO 251), Ecology and Evolution (BIO 151), and Marine Biology (BIO 247). In summers, he teaches at Wheaton College's Black Hills Science Station. His work integrates science with environmental stewardship, emphasizing creation care and Christian faith perspectives.
Dr. Larsen's publications span entomological journals, focusing on insect diversity, invasive species, and habitat management. His field interests include gardening, trombone playing, and outdoor activities like hiking and fly fishing. He actively collaborates with undergraduate researchers, mentoring students in ecological studies.
