Kirby Barrett is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design. He is based in Seaton Hall, Manhattan, KS, and actively contributes to teaching, research, and creative practice in landscape architecture. His work bridges academic inquiry with professional application, emphasizing the integration of design creativity and technical precision.
His educational and professional background includes experience in private practice in Texas, working with municipal governments, universities, non-profits, and private developers, as well as prior work with K-State’s Campus Planning & Project Management. He is a registered landscape architect in Texas, bringing real-world expertise into his academic role.
Kirby’s research centers on the relationship between design quality and construction outcomes, the use of CAD/BIM tools to improve design communication and workflows, and methods to cultivate technical proficiency among design students. He explores how hands-on making and building inform broader site design problem-solving across scales.
He teaches courses such as Site Design Implementation and Site Planning and Design, where he integrates practice-based components to develop students’ technical creativity, craft, and tool proficiency—spanning digital software, drawing instruments, and physical construction tools.
