Dr. Kinga Unocic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NC State University, part of the College of Engineering. She holds a master’s from AGH University of Science and Technology (2002) and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University (2008). Prior to her faculty role, she served as a Staff Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (since 2009). Her research focuses on materials in extreme environments, catalysis, and advanced characterization techniques, with a particular emphasis on in situ electron microscopy and additive manufacturing applications.
Her research interests include high-temperature oxidation, radiation effects, novel materials processing, alloy development, and catalytic processes. Dr. Unocic leads the Kinga Unocic Research Lab, which develops methods to correlate nanoscale material structure with macroscopic performance under extreme conditions. She is an active member of professional societies, including leadership roles in the TMS Young Leaders Program and TMS Corrosion Committee.
- Awards: 2023 UT-Battelle Technology Transfer Award, 2023 TMS Brimacombe Medal, 2017 TMS-JIM Young Leaders Scholar Award
Her publications span catalytic processes, materials characterization, and additive manufacturing innovations. The lab also explores structural materials for energy applications and advanced composites. Dr. Unocic collaborates widely on projects involving materials for extreme environments and sustainable energy solutions.
