Kin Chan

Kin Chan serves as an Additional Instructor for the SEA-PHAGES program at the University of Ottawa during Winter 2024, collaborating with Primary Instructor Adam Rudner to lead eight sections: four Annotation Sections (A-D) and four Team sections (Circuit & Vitus, PastaFagioli & Olympi, Scotia & Ball, Zippen & Chlochlo), engaging 112 junior students in phage-related research.

His academic focus centers on phage genomics and bioinformatics, utilizing bacterial hosts including Mycobacterium smegmatis, Arthrobacter globiformis, Arthrobacter sulfureus, Streptomyces avermitilis, and Microbacterium foliorum for genomic analysis and phage discovery. The program integrates both computational (in silico) and laboratory-based (in situ) methodologies to explore viral evolution and microbial ecology.

As an educator, Kin Chan facilitates hands-on instruction across all sections, meeting twice weekly for six hours per section to guide students through genomic annotation pipelines and phage isolation techniques. His teaching emphasizes practical application of bioinformatics tools and microbiological methods, preparing students for advanced research in viral genomics and host-pathogen interactions.
