Kimberly Lau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Penn State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. She is also affiliated with the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute at Penn State.
Dr. Lau specializes in understanding the complex relationships between ocean oxygenation, biogeochemical cycles, and Earth's history. Her research focuses on:
- Paleoceanography and sedimentary geochemistry
- Biogeochemical cycling through Earth's history
- Development and evaluation of geochemical proxies
- Earth system feedbacks during critical transitions
Her work combines analytical geochemistry with numerical modeling to reconstruct past environmental conditions and understand the mechanisms driving Earth system changes. Dr. Lau particularly focuses on uranium isotopes as a tool for quantitatively reconstructing ancient ocean redox conditions.
Dr. Lau has received her academic training from prestigious institutions:
- Ph.D. in geological sciences from Stanford University
- B.S. in geology and geophysics from Yale University
- Agoroun Geobiology Postdoc at UC Riverside
Before joining Penn State, she served as an assistant professor at the University of Wyoming.
