Dr. Mullins' research focuses on information literacy instruction, instructional design for library integration, and ethnographic studies of student research behaviors. She developed the IDEA model to embed information literacy in academic courses and created the Research+ mobile application for on-demand learning. Her work examines how students interact with library resources and spaces, aiming to improve library services and student learning outcomes in higher education through evidence-based practices.
Her recent publications (2014-2024) demonstrate a cohesive research trajectory centered on academic librarians' role in student success. Key themes include ethnographic investigations of library space utilization, transfer of learning in research contexts, and mobile technology for information literacy. Collaborative projects with colleagues at LIU and Adelphi reveal how student-library interactions shape research behaviors, with implications for instructional design and library service models.
Dr. Mullins actively contributes to institutional initiatives through leadership roles including Chair of the Library Diversity Council, participation in the Web Discover Working Group, and service on the Academic Diversity Implementation Team. Her ethnographic research teams at both LIU and Adelphi have pioneered methods for observing student-library interactions to inform evidence-based service improvements.
