Kim Myhr is a PhD candidate and research fellow at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in the Department of improvised music, jazz and folk music, employed since September 1, 2025. His NordART-funded artistic research project 'Shimmering harmony' investigates the 12-string guitar's potential through dual sonic and social dimensions.
Myhr's research centers on sonic resonance—examining the instrument's orchestral timbre via solo performance and custom guitar development with luthier Simen Omang—and social resonance, which explores community-building through collective listening events like monthly 12-string meetings for professionals and amateurs. Drawing on acousmatic theory (Schaeffer), phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty), and sociology (Rosa), his work investigates sonic memory and the guitar's historical traces.
Funded by NordART, the project involves collaborations with sound engineer Benjamin Maumus, GMEA (Albi), and INA GRM (Paris). Outcomes include instrument construction, ensemble works for guitar quartets and Acousmonium, public performances, and album releases, aiming to expand both the musical and social understanding of the 12-string guitar.
