Kim Knowles is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University. She specializes in experimental film, focusing on materialist practices, ecological cinema, and intermedial relationships between film and other art forms. Her academic roles include editorial leadership for Millennium Film Journal and the Experimental Film and Artists' Moving Image book series (Palgrave Macmillan). She has held external examiner roles at Anglia Ruskin University, Birkbeck, and the University of Bristol.
Her research examines avant-garde traditions, non-human representation, and the ecological implications of film practices. She co-led the AHRC-funded Film and the Other Arts project (2015–2017) and collaborated on the Austrian-funded Reset the Apparatus! initiative (2016–2019). As Experimental Film Programmer for the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Black Box strand (2008–2022), she curated daring experimental works from global filmmakers.
Her recent work explores multispecies cinema and the intersection of film with eco-philosophy. She coordinates Aberystwyth’s MA in Documentary Filmmaking: Landscape and Ecology, emphasizing sustainable filmmaking practices. Her publications include Experimental Film and Photochemical Practices (2020) and edited volumes like The Palgrave Handbook of Experimental Cinema (2024).
