Kim Hyun-wook

Kim Hyun-wook serves as an Associate Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), leading the Systems Biology and Medicine Lab (SBML). His research bridges computational biology and medical applications to solve critical biotechnology and healthcare challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.

His research focuses on Systems Biology, Systems Medicine, and Metabolic Engineering, utilizing machine learning, genome-scale metabolic models, and bioinformatics to analyze complex biological networks. Key projects include building and analyzing bio-networks (metabolism, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation) of medically important systems, predicting drug targets for infectious/chronic diseases, and forecasting drug responses using chemical-medical data integration.

Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate strong trends in computational oncology and AI-driven biological data analysis, particularly in cancer research and pathway image processing. This work highlights the lab's expertise in translating computational models to clinical applications.

Professor Kim actively mentors graduate students, with multiple PhD graduates in 2025 (Junhyeok Jeon, Mun Su Kwon, Byung Tae Lee, Joonyoung Kwon) and current students (Taeyoung Lee, Jihi Yeom, Soomin Lee, Ye Rin Park, Nithya Manickavasagam). His lab maintains extensive hospital collaborations and participates in international conferences including KSBB-AFOB 2025 and Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Conference.

The Systems Biology and Medicine Lab (SBML) operates as a dynamic research hub, conducting workshops (e.g., Jeonju Hanok Village 2024) and fostering innovation through computational methodologies that address real-world biomedical problems.
