Dr. Kiel Christianson is a Professor and current Department Chair (until August 15, 2025) in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He also holds professorial appointments in Psychology, Linguistics, and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. His interdisciplinary work bridges cognitive psychology, linguistics, and education.
Dr. Christianson's research focuses on psycholinguistics, with particular expertise in syntactic parsing, sentence comprehension in reading and listening, bilingualism, and morphological processing. His work employs eye-tracking methodologies to investigate how readers process language in real-time. He directs the Psycholinguistics Lab, which conducts cutting-edge research in language processing.
His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to understanding garden-path sentences, agreement processing, and the role of working memory in language comprehension. His recent work has increasingly focused on cross-linguistic comparisons and second language acquisition.

Dr. Christianson also serves as Director of the Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE) Program at the School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics.
