Khondkar Islam is a Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at George Mason University's College of Engineering and Computing. He also directs the Virtual Academy and Cisco Academy. With 30 years of experience in IT, telecommunications, and academia, his expertise spans cybersecurity, networking, and distance education. He has reviewed technical book chapters for major publishers and published numerous peer-reviewed articles. His research focuses on distributed P2P networks, IoT security, learning analytics, and engineering education. He has secured grants totaling over $3 million for initiatives such as the Virginia Cyber Navigator Internship Program and Break Through Tech: Inclusive Computing at Mason.
Education: PhD and BS in Information Technology from George Mason University, MS in Computer Science from American University.
Research Interests: Distributed peer-to-peer networks, IoT security, distance education methodologies, learning analytics, and cyber-physical systems. He has led NSF-funded projects like TILES (Trajectories of Informal Learning Among Engineering Students) and Cisco-funded initiatives to enhance virtual learning.
Teaching: Coordinates IT341 (Data Communications and Networking Principles) and teaches courses on IT in the global economy, operating systems, and advanced networking. He has developed distance education frameworks for Cisco Academy and contributed to STEM outreach programs in Malaysia.
Grants & Leadership: Principal/Co-Principal Investigator on grants including DoD Cybersecurity Scholarships and NSF awards. His leadership extends to advisory roles at international conferences (e.g., IEEE, ASEE) and editorial board memberships.
