Kholoud Khaled Essawy serves as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the School of Art + Design at Ohio University, part of the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts. An Egyptian national with 12 years of teaching experience, she bridges professional design practice and academic instruction through her specialization in bilingual typography.
Her educational foundation includes a PhD in Graphic Design from the German University in Cairo (2025), which informs her research at the intersection of cultural linguistics and visual design. This academic background supports her practical work in developing typographic systems for multilingual communication.
Professor Essawy's research centers on bilingual typeface design, specifically addressing the technical and cultural challenges of integrating Arabic and Latin scripts. Through her MAKYN Type Foundry, she develops functional type systems that preserve cultural authenticity while ensuring digital compatibility, contributing to inclusive design practices in global communication contexts.
MAKYN functions as both her creative studio and research platform, where she designs, tests, and releases typefaces that serve as practical applications of her academic work. This integration of professional practice and scholarly inquiry provides students with real-world models of design entrepreneurship within typographic specialization.
