Dr. Kevin Theissen is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Environment, & Society at the University of St. Thomas' College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on sedimentary geochemistry and paleolimnology to study past climate and environmental change, with emphasis on Holocene climate patterns and human impacts on lake ecosystems. He collaborates with the Science Museum of Minnesota's St. Croix Watershed Research Laboratory and leads field courses in Iceland.
Education includes:
- PhD in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford University
- BA in Geology from Carleton College
Research interests span paleoclimatology, sedimentary geochemistry, Holocene climate reconstruction in the Great Basin, polar climate impacts, nutrient cycling in Minnesota lakes, and climate change education. His work integrates sediment core analysis with stable isotope geochemistry to reconstruct hydrological histories.
Publications primarily explore Holocene climate variability through lacustrine archives, paleohydrological reconstructions in arid regions, human impacts on lake ecosystems, and microbial sedimentology. Recent work demonstrates increased focus on isotope geochemistry applications and community-engaged research.
Awards include:
- University of St. Thomas Undergraduate Research Award for Faculty (2017)
Research involves extensive student collaboration through field projects in Nevada and Minnesota lakes. Current grants support watershed management partnerships with Comfort Lake-Forest Lake Watershed District.
Directs sediment core research at St. Croix Watershed Research Laboratory and coordinates interdisciplinary teams for polar climate studies and Great Basin fieldwork.
