Kevin Sun is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, he taught computer science at Elon University during the 2022-23 academic year. He earned his PhD and MS in Computer Science from Duke University in 2022 and completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University, majoring in both Computer Science and Mathematics.
Dr. Sun's research and teaching interests focus on online algorithms, combinatorial optimization, and computer science education. His scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on educational innovation, with particular attention to how students learn algorithms and computer science concepts. He has developed a strong interest in pedagogical methods and the philosophy of teaching, particularly in the context of computer science education at the undergraduate level.
His publications span both technical computer science topics and educational scholarship, with recent work examining the implications of AI technologies like ChatGPT for higher education. His research explores both traditional teaching methods and emerging technologies that impact learning environments.
Kevin Sun has established himself as a thought leader in computer science education through his "Teaching CS" newsletter and his website (kevinsun.org), where he shares insights on teaching, learning, and various interdisciplinary topics that bridge computer science with broader educational and philosophical questions.
As an educator, Sun has been actively involved in curriculum development for computer science courses and has explored innovative assessment methods, including the implementation of oral examinations in virtual classroom settings. His teaching philosophy emphasizes student engagement and deep conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.
