Kevin Pimbblet is a Professor and Director of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, AI and Modelling (DAIM) at the University of Hull. He holds academic affiliations with the E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics and Lasers and Light Matter Interactions research groups. His expertise spans observational astronomy, galaxy evolution, and applied data science. He earned his PhD from Durham University's Collingwood College in 1998-2001, focusing on stellar populations in X-ray luminous clusters.
Education: PhD in Astronomy (Durham University, 2001), B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics. Professional recognition includes Fellowships of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) and Australasian Society for Astronomy (FASA).
Research interests include galaxy evolution, large-scale cosmic structures, AI-driven astronomy, and physics education. Key areas encompass radio source classification, HI absorption studies, and galaxy morphology analysis in surveys like GAMA and KiDS. He advocates for AI ethics and curricular reform in STEM education.
Grants & Projects: Led over £2.3M in grants including STFC-funded astrophysics projects, AI/ML training initiatives, and collaborations with QinetiQ. Current projects include AI governance in Burkina Faso and wildlife conflict simulations. Supervised 17 PhD candidates since 2004, with ongoing supervision of four current students.
Labs/Teams: Directs DAIM Centre, collaborates with Hull's High-Performance Computing facilities, and leads international initiatives like the First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH).
