Kevin M.F. Platt is a Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as the department's Graduate Chair. His work spans Russian history, cultural memory, and global post-Soviet studies. Platt holds a B.A. from Amherst College (1989) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1994), with prior faculty experience at Pomona College. He has received grants from IREX, NEH, and the Guggenheim Foundation (2011-12).
Platt’s research focuses on Russian historiography, post-Soviet cultural dynamics, and Latvian-Russian literary exchanges. His major publications include *Terror and Greatness: Ivan and Peter as Russian Myths* (2011), *Border Conditions: Russian-Speaking Latvians Between World Orders* (2024), and edited volumes like *Global Russian Cultures* (2018). He organizes the *Your Language My Ear* poetry translation symposium and has contributed to translating works by Russian poets like Sergey Zavyalov. Current projects explore global cultural exchange in the 20th century and Soviet/post-Soviet memory studies.
Platt’s affiliations include the Penn Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Group, and he serves on the faculties of Comparative Literature, History of Art, and Cinema Studies. His work bridges literary analysis, historical critique, and transnational cultural studies, emphasizing postcolonial and decolonial frameworks.
