Kevin M Walsh is the Samuel T. Fife Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Louisville's JB Speed School of Engineering. He serves as the founding director of the UofL Micro/NanoTechnology Center (MNTC), which houses a 10,000 sq. ft. class 100 cleanroom facility ranked among the top 10 in the United States. His leadership has brought over $55M in research awards to the University of Louisville.
Dr. Walsh earned his B.S. and M.Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Louisville (1978, 1985) and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering (microelectronics/MEMS) from the University of Cincinnati (1992).
His research focuses on micro/nanotechnology and MEMS, with particular expertise in glancing angle deposition techniques, aerosol jet printing, and microfabrication. His current work explores bio-inspired antimicrobial surfaces, superhydrophobic structures, and advanced packaging methods for custom MEMS devices. His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on applying nanofabrication techniques to solve practical engineering challenges in biomedical applications, sensing technologies, and advanced manufacturing.
Dr. Walsh serves on the editorial board of Sensor Letters, the Review Board for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory CNMS User Program, and the RSL Advisory Board for the National Nanotechnology Initiative. He has twice received his school's top Research Award (1998-2000, 2007-2009) and has been inducted into the Trinity High School Hall of Fame (2000), UofL Athletic Hall of Fame (2001), and Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame (2005).
He has taught over 20 different courses and advised more than 30 completed theses. His research group has secured over $35M in external funding from DoD, DOE, NSF, NASA, NIH, and industry partners. Dr. Walsh co-founded four technical start-up companies (Assenti, OrthoData Technologies, UltraTrace Detection, and Simon Sounds) and holds 12 awarded patents.
The UofL Micro/NanoTechnology Center under his direction operates as a hub for interdisciplinary research, and he founded the KY nanoNET Initiative, an NSF-funded statewide network coordinating micro and nanotechnology efforts across Kentucky.
