Kevin Luhman is a Professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University. His research focuses on star formation, brown dwarfs, and circumstellar disks using telescopes like Gaia and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). He has contributed to studies of nearby star-forming regions such as IC 348 and the Orion Nebula Cluster, discovering the least massive known brown dwarfs and proposing a new spectral class for low-temperature objects.
Education: B.A. and B.S. in Astronomy and Physics from the University of Texas at Austin (1993), PhD in Astronomy from the University of Arizona (1998).
Research Interests:
- Discovery and characterization of brown dwarfs and planetary mass objects
- Analysis of star-forming regions using Gaia and JWST data
- Study of circumstellar disks and their role in planet formation
- Identification of hydrocarbon features in brown dwarf atmospheres
Key Projects:
- Lead investigator for JWST surveys in IC 348 (2022-2024)
- Pioneer in identifying brown dwarfs via JWST's NIRCam and NIRSpec instruments
- Co-author of groundbreaking papers on brown dwarf mass limits and spectral classification
Collaborations: Works with institutions like the European Space Agency (Catarina Alves de Oliveira) and NASA on space telescope projects.
