Kevin Hunter is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a B.S. and M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. His research focuses on improving chemistry education through qualitative studies of student reasoning in general and organic chemistry, coupled with the development of user-centered instructional materials. He teaches across general/organic chemistry sequences and innovative courses like the first-year seminar on color chemistry/psychology and a darkroom photography course via the Norris Center.
Education:
- B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry, Carnegie Mellon University
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of Iowa
Research interests emphasize making chemistry more accessible via:
- Student conceptualization analysis
- Instructional material design
- Qualitative educational research methods
Teaching innovations include:
- Interdisciplinary color psychology/chemistry seminar
- Photography course integrating chemistry principles
His work prioritizes iterative user-centered design to bridge theory-practice gaps in STEM education.
