Kevin Crawley is a Senior Law Lecturer and Programme Leader of the Bar Professional Training Programme at Northumbria University’s School of Law. He is also a practising barrister specialising in family law at Trinity Chambers, Newcastle upon Tyne. With over seventeen years' experience, he appears in high-value ancillary relief and complex public law Children Act cases. His dual role combines academic teaching (e.g., family law, advocacy, and professional ethics) with legal practice. He holds a BSc (Econ) in Development Studies from Swansea University (1990) and an MA and Diploma in Social Work from Durham University (1993). Currently a PhD candidate at Durham University, his research examines alternative dispute resolution in family law, questioning assumptions about mediation versus litigation.
Kevin’s professional background includes six years as a probation and family court welfare officer, writing court reports for private law Children Act cases. He is a qualified family law mediator, accredited by the Advocacy Training Council, and affiliated with the North Eastern Circuit and Family Law Bar Association. His academic contributions include papers on mediation in family law, interdisciplinary advocacy teaching, and pro bono engagement at the Bar.
His PhD research evaluates mediation processes, mediator training, outcomes, costs, and impacts on the family justice system, supervised by Dr. Andy Hayward.
