Kevin Brooks is a Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University, where he conducts research across multiple specialized centers including the Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre, Perception in Action Research Centre, and Performance and Expertise Research Centre. His academic career spans internationally recognized institutions including NASA Ames Research Center, University of New South Wales, and University of Plymouth before his current appointment.
Dr. Brooks earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of York (1992-1995), followed by a D.Phil. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Sussex (1995-1999), where he completed his thesis on 'Mechanisms of Suprathreshold Stereomotion Perception' under Professor George Mather. His educational background began with undergraduate studies in Physics at Imperial College, London.
His research focuses on visual perception phenomena, with particular expertise in motion processing (speed and direction perception), binocular depth perception (including stereoscopic art and unmatched stereopsis), face and body perception (including recognition and misperception of body size and shape), and perceptual adaptation mechanisms. His work bridges fundamental perceptual processes with real-world applications in health and wellbeing.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting perception psychology with clinical applications, particularly in body image disorders, eating behaviors, and mental health. His work increasingly incorporates advanced methodologies including virtual reality, eye-tracking, and neuroimaging to investigate perceptual mechanisms.

Professor Brooks has secured significant research funding through multiple projects including the Mobile Eyetracking Laboratory (ongoing), MQRSG targeting body size misperception (2019-2021), Rigorous Vision Science in the Real World (2016), and the Virtual Reality Dome System (2014). His teaching portfolio includes advanced courses in perception, research methods, and real-world applications of perceptual psychology.
He is actively involved with several research centers at Macquarie University, particularly those focused on perception, health and wellbeing, and expertise development. His current research utilizes cutting-edge technology including mobile eye-tracking and virtual reality systems to investigate perceptual phenomena in real-world contexts.
