Kevin Bontenbal is a Lecturer at San José State University's School of Information since 2004. He also serves as the Instructional Technology Librarian at Cuesta College, a community college in San Luis Obispo, California, where he has worked since 1997. Additionally, he has been an Adjunct Professor in Cuesta College's Library/Information Technology Program since 1997.
Dr. Bontenbal's educational background includes an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Santa Barbara & CSU, Cal Poly (2006), an M.L.S. from Syracuse University (1997), and dual Bachelor's degrees in Philosophy and Religious Studies from CSU, Chico (1992).
His research interests focus on critical areas within Library and Information Science, particularly continuing education, distance education, information literacy, information retrieval systems, and the philosophical aspects of LIS. His work bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application in academic library settings, with special attention to technology integration in library services and instruction.
His publications primarily examine the intersection of technology and library instruction, with a focus on adult learners and distance education environments. His research demonstrates consistent interest in how libraries can adapt to technological changes while maintaining effective user services.
Dr. Bontenbal is also very active in college governance, having served in many faculty leadership roles, and has assisted his college with research planning efforts.
He teaches INFO 200 – Information Communities at San José State University, connecting his practical experience as a librarian with academic instruction.
