Kevin Avruch is the Henry Hart Rice Professor of Conflict Resolution and Professor of Anthropology at George Mason University, affiliated with the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. He has served at GMU since 1980 after teaching positions at UC San Diego and University of Illinois at Chicago, holding leadership roles including dean of S-CAR (2013-2019) and associate director of ICAR (2005-2008).
His educational background includes an AB from the University of Chicago and MA/PhD from UC San Diego.
Avruch's research centers on Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Nationalist and Ethnoreligious Social Movements, and Politics and Society in Contemporary Israel, with additional expertise in Culture Theory, Third-Party Processes, and Cross-Cultural Negotiation. Current projects investigate political violence in protracted conflicts, human rights in postconflict peacebuilding, and cultural dimensions of humanitarian operations.
His awards include:

Avruch maintains significant editorial influence as book review editor for Anthropological Quarterly and board member for Journal of Political and Military Sociology, Social Justice, and The Ethnography of Political Violence monograph series. His extensive publication record includes over 70 articles and five books.
He remains actively integrated with GMU's conflict resolution infrastructure through the Carter School and ICAR, where his leadership has shaped institutional development for decades.
