Ketil Stølen is a Professor at the University of Oslo's Department of Informatics and an Adjunct Professor in Computer Science. His roles include Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital and leadership in numerous research projects focusing on cybersecurity, risk analysis, and formal methods. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester (1990) and a Cand Scient from the University of Oslo (1986). His research interests span software engineering, formal methods, and model-driven security analysis. He has led major projects such as the Gemini Centre on IoT, the CORAS risk analysis framework, and the CORAS tool development.
Stølen has authored several books including Cyber-Risk Management (Springer, 2015) and Technology Science (Springer, 2023). His work emphasizes rigorous approaches to security testing, risk assessment, and system design. He has supervised multiple PhD graduates and taught courses on formal methods and cybersecurity at the University of Oslo and other institutions. His contributions include pioneering methods like the CORAS approach for security risk analysis and the STAIRS framework for UML sequence diagrams.
He is an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. Notable projects include the AGRA risk assessment initiative and the EMERGENCY decision support system for crisis management. His research bridges theoretical formalisms with practical applications in critical infrastructure and emergency response systems.
